Join us for an evening with Gateshead based photographer, Phyllis Christopher.
In August 2025 the Side Gallery website said:
“For more than three decades, photographer Phyllis Christopher has been creating intimate, defiant and tender portraits of lesbian and queer life, from the charged energy of protest to the quiet beauty of everyday moments.

“Emerging from the DIY punk spirit of the 1980s, her work has challenged invisibility, celebrated pleasure and documented the resilience of communities often pushed to the margins. With her latest project, Body in Peril, Christopher returns to analogue film to explore rarely seen narratives of ageing, illness and transition, revealing both vulnerability and strength.”
Phyllis’ work documenting lesbian visibility, sexuality and protest, Dark Room: San Francisco Sex and Protest, 1988-2002, (edited by Laura Guy) was published by Book Works in 2022.
Her work has also been published in Photography - A Queer History (co-edited by Flora Dunster & Theo Gordon), Nothing But The Girl: The Blatant Lesbian Image (co-edited by Susie Bright and Jill Posener), Art & Queer Culture (co-edited by Catherine Lord and Richard Meyer) and Aperture Magazine. She is the former photo editor of On Our Backs magazine.
In 2019 her work was featured in the group show 'Still I Rise: Feminisms, Gender, Resistance', at Nottingham Contemporary. In 2021, her work was the subject of a major retrospective organised between BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, and Grand Union, Birmingham.
